Although women going to the gym shouldn’t feel like they are heading to a fashion show, it is still important that they look and feel good when working out. When women look good, they feel good. When women wear comfortable clothing  that makes them feel confident about themselves, it does more than boost the self-esteem; it allows for ease of movement and better workout sessions. However, there are few things women just shouldn’t wear to the gym.

For women who have just embarked on a new exercise regime or those who are heading to a gym for the first time, this guide will serve to clear up any questions about what not to wear at the gym. Of course, knowing what to avoid isn’t enough, so women should also know what to wear to the gym. For women who are currently participating in an exercise regime at a gym, there are some important reminders and refreshers as well as tips that will increase their comfort level while working out as well.

Despite what fashion magazines and advertisements seem to say, there are some things that women shouldn’t wear to the gym. Some clothing gets in the way, some clothing can cause irritation, some can be a distraction, and some can even cause infections. It is important for women to know what clothing they shouldn’t wear to the gym to avoid issues and make them feel more confident while working out.

Don’t Wear All Cotton T-Shirts

A T-shirt seems like an ideal athletic top to wear to the gym, but the most important reason not to wear an all-cotton shirt is that cotton absorbs sweat and doesn’t release it quickly through evaporation. When women wear heavy, all-cotton shirts while working out it can become wet with sweat causing chills as well as irritation to the skin. Instead, women should opt for the technologically advanced tops that will wick moisture away from the body. Some materials that do this include Cool Max and DRI-FIT

Don’t Wear Revealing Tops

Again, working out at the gym is not the time or place to be making a fashion statement; it is to strengthen the body. It is important that women check their tops as a little too much cleavage can be distracting for others and even uncomfortable for the woman. For example, a tank may look modest when a woman is standing, but once she gets into pushup position, the whole gym may get flashed. To prevent flashing anyone in the gym, women should check their tops from several different angles by bending forward, reaching and leaning sideways, and doing jumping jacks to check the bounce factor. Cleavage proof tanks are made with a higher neckline which helps eliminate any indecent exposure.

Don’t Wear Baggy Sweatpants

Many times the movies and media portray people wearing baggy pants while working out at the gym, but this can be dangerous. Baggy pants can catch on the various pieces exercise equipment such as stationary bikes where the baggy material could get caught on the pedals. Long baggy pants could also cause a woman to trip while running on a treadmill and cause serious injury. The best pants options for the gym are capris, slim fitting pants, or shorts.

Don’t Wear Thong Underwear

Most women would think inconspicuous underwear, like thongs, would look better under slim-fitting pants or shorts, which is true, but at the gym, they can be a problem. Thongs are not the best option for the gym because when women sweat, bacteria can travel along the thong and can cause various infections to develop. They can also aggravate an existing irritation. Therefore, seamless underwear, which are nearly invisible, made from a wicking material are best for working out at the gym.

Don’t Wear a Long Sleeve T-Shirt Around the Waist

Wrapping a long sleeve T-shirt or sweatshirt around the waist makes for a good storage spot for that unused shirt, but it can be a problem at the gym. The unused T-shirt adds bulk on a woman that can get in the way while she is exercising. Also, just like the baggy pants, sleeves and other hanging material can get caught in various machines at the gym, which could result in serious injury. Therefore, women should put the extra layer in a gym locker or leave it at home.

Don’t Wear Shoes with Digits

Clothes aren’t the only things that need worn at the gym. Shoes can affect a woman’s workout especially if they are the wrong ones. Shoes with digits which are the closest to naked shoes have gained a lot of popularity among runners, but the shoes can be a liability. Several gyms have policies against bare feet wear. This is because even if a woman isn’t working out in the weights area, she may still walk by it, and bare feet shoes do not provide protection against falling dumbbells.

what to wear to d gym

Now that women know what not to wear to the gym, it is essential that they know what to wear. While the club isn’t a fashion show, it is still important to look good, feel good, and have confidence, and wearing the right gym attire will give women all of that and more.

Wear the Right Undergarments

The first things women put on are their undergarments. Undergarments can make the difference between a successful workout session and a painful one. Well-fitted bras will keep the girls close to the chest to prevent bouncing and back pain. To find the right sport bra, women should try on a variety of bra styles and sizes before buying one. Once the bra is on, women should try moving around in it, bending over, and jumping up and down to ensure the bra and the girls stay in place. Underwear should also be well-fitted with wicking abilities.

Wear Bottoms Based on the Type of Exercise

Women should choose bottoms based on the type of exercise they will be doing at the gym. Women have a large variety of bottoms they can choose from including cropped leggings for yoga, shorts for cycling, and stretch pants for Pilates and regular exercises. When choosing pants, women should look for pants that stay put and don’t have to constantly be pulled up or adjusted. Purchasing a few different styles will help women to know which kind of pants they like to wear best at the gym.

Wear the Right Socks

Socks are important for keeping the feet from getting injured. When women work out, their feet sweat; it is inevitable. Therefore, it is important that women buy socks that allow their feet to breathe, and have wicking capabilities. Wool and cotton retain moisture which can cause blisters and other foot problems, but socks made from acrylic or acrylic blends will allow the feet to breathe and wick sweat away from the skin.

Wear the Right Footwear

Having the proper footwear is essential to everyone’s workout. Before buying shoes for the gym, women should try on a few different kinds to see which one feels right. To find an accurate fit when trying shoes on, women will need to wear the socks they would wear to the gym. Another thing to consider is wearing shoes that fit the activity. The following are a few different shoes for different activities.
